Video director, co-producer, and editor Wilfred Driscoll was inspired to create the original animation video using the hand-drawn techniques and art style of the late 1970s early 1980’s educational cartoons we all grew up with on PBS and the link.  He explains: “It was important to remain true to the style that inspires AM & Shawn Lee: all artwork was created by hand and took about 3 weeks. While the animation took place digitally, we maintained the look and feel of the cartoons of the time. The song “Come Back to Me’ set the mood, bringing us all to a place of nostalgia and wonder.  The spacey atmosphere of the song is what tied these two characters together; a lonely planet and an experienced wacky space traveler.”

The band followed up La Musique Numerique with a new remix album last month entitled Replayed, which features mixes from psychedelic-soul band Monophonics (who join AM & Shawn Lee in San Francisco), German duo Ancient Astronauts, London’s JetTricks, LA-based producer I, Ced (who has worked with DâM FunK & Shuggie Otis), and more.  Thievery Corporation’s Rob Garza also released a remix of AM & Shawn Lee’s “Promises Are Never Far From Lies” on his new album.

Hailing from LA and London respectively, AM & Shawn Lee take hints from disco, soul, funk, and the 60’s & 70’s soundtrack music for which they share a passion. The duo’s sophomore album, La Musique Numerique (released May 7th via Park The Van Records), garnered praise from Rolling Stone, SPIN, USA Today,FILTER, KEXP & more, and their live show has earned attention from the likes of LA Weekly, Washington Post, and Seattle Weekly, among others. Those who missed the band on their electrified Sounds of Summer Tour with sold out shows have another chance to catch them live in action when they hit the road this fall!

In addition to bringing their energized live show across the US, AM & Shawn Lee are releasing a new remix album. Replayed, out (8/20) via Park The Van Records, features eight remixes of La Musique Numerique favorites— from San Francisco psychedelic-soul band Monophonics, German duo Ancient Astronauts, London’s JetTricks, France’s Blundetto & more.

The album also features a remix of the smooth, shimmering “Replay” by LA-based producer I, Ced, who plays with artists like DâM FunK & Shuggie Otis. You can check out the “Replay” (I, Ced remix) where it premiered with URB, and post/share the track via Bandcamp. Hear the original version in the band’s nostalgic “Replay” video.

With infecious hooks, funky filtered bass lines, and danceable beats, don’t miss AM & Shawn Lee live when they invade your city! Stayed tuned for more fall dates, coming soon.

Rolling Stone Premiers Single “Two Times” From AM & Shawn Lee

image

Hailing from LA and London respectively, AM & Shawn Lee first bonded over their mutual love of vintage French and Italian Soundtrack music and 80’s digital effects. Separately, the two have racked up an impressive number of accomplishments: as a solo artist, AM has earned widespread acclaim for his unique mixture of pop, soul, R&B and psychedelia, and Shawn Lee, best known as instrumentalist groove-master, is also one of hip hop’s most sampled artists.  The duo have shared stages with bands such as AIR, Phoenix, Sigur Ros, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Caetano Veloso, and Bonnie “Prince” Billy. After releasing a debut album, Celestial Electric, in 2011 to praise from KEXP, FILTER, Under The Radar, NYLON and more, the duo is back with their first release on Park The Van Records (Dr. Dog, He’s My Brother She’s My Sister, Generationals.) Paying homage to the beginning of the digital era with their own brand of electro-tinged soul, AM & Shawn Lee’s La Musique Numerique will be released on May 7th. The album is currently available for pre-order HERE, where you can also grab a limited edition 7”!

Album opener “Two Times” blends 70’s funk with 80’s Sleng Teng Riddims, complete with an infectious groove that will keep you on your toes.  For an early taste of the new album, you can download the “Two Times” MP3 where it premiered with Rolling Stone or HERE, and you’re encouraged to post & share the MP3.

Exploring themes of love, addiction, and even economic bitterness, La Musique Numeriqueis a throwback to the Casio’s heyday while remaining futuristic and inventive. Album track “Automatic” features an irresistiblechorus punctuated by a danceable beat, funky filtered bass lines, and an electric sitar intro that will have you immediately hooked. “All The Love” speeds up the pace with a toe-tapping disco beat, catchy vocal melodies, and a chorus that begs you to move. “In The Aftermath” is a sonically rich ballad with swirling layers of vintage synth instrumentation that set an atmospheric tone, showing a softer side of the album.

AM & Shawn Lee blur genre boundaries with a unique sound that fuses the best parts of funk, soul, disco, and electro, uniting the past and the future of music. Stay tuned for tour dates from AM & Shawn Lee, coming soon!
